While there’s no doubt that being adept at using digital tools and technologies is essential for everyone in the 21st century - teachers and students alike - possessing digital skills is not the same as being digitally literate. It’s a mistake to assume that exposure to digital tools and technologies automatically equates to the knowledge of how to use these effectively. Technical proficiency ? digital literacy Our students are tech-savvy digital natives. They know their way around a tablet, smartphone and laptop better than most. More often than not, they know how to do a voice search on an iPad, share selfies on Instagram, play a video game and send a GIF on WhatsApp. But what they lack is the knowledge of how to use these digital tools and technologies to communicate and achieve their learning goals. Some examples of digital skills vs. digital literacies include the following: Digital Skills Digital Literacy Sending an email, DM or text. The ability to judge the appropriate digital channel for online communication with peers, teachers and parents. Using Microsoft Office/Google G Suite. Because digital literacy is so essential not only to our students’ academic and future career success but also their ability to fully participate in modern society, teaching digital literacy is quickly becoming a critical part of the curriculum at the K-8 level. Question: Do I have to take an AP class in order to take the AP exam Brief: The simple answer is no, but there are some things that you should think about and discuss with your Irvine private academic tutor before making that choice. Answer No, you do not have to take an AP class in order to take the AP exam. But should you? The AP exams are college level courses so, taking the AP exam without taking the class would be like showing up at college two years early on the day of the final exam and keeping your fingers crossed. Of course, there are some situations when this may be your only option but you still want a shot at doing well on these exams. For example, if your school doesn’t offer the AP course that you wish to take or if you attend a school that doesn’t offer them at all (READ: Last Minute AP Exam Study Guide). If you find yourself in a position where the only way you can take the AP exam is without taking the AP course, I recommend the following plan of action: 1. Examine your motivations for taking the AP test without the course. If you absolutely LOVE the subject or if you must take this exam to apply to a certain university program, then by all means go ahead. But, if you just don’t feel like taking the course, think about the advantage that your classmates who did take the course will have on exam day (READ: The Students Guide to Study Breaks). 2. Order a test prep study book for the test you are taking as well as the full length text book for the course and get started right away. 3. Have an Orange County in-home tutor who specializes in that particular AP course help you make a plan of action for your studies as well as help explain new and challenging topics. 4. Stick to your plan of action schedule. If most students, who are taking the course, are studying six hours a week at home and are in class for five hours a week, then you should be studying a total of 11 hours per week as well. 5. Take several practice tests and self grade them. Determine patterns of error and get help from a specialist for the areas that you need to improve. On the other hand, if you want to take the European history AP exam and your school offers AP Euro, then I highly recommend that you take the full course -as well as consider one of our Irvine history tutors . There is so much to be gained from taking the course and you will have a much better chance of getting a score of 3, 4 or 5 on test day. Of course, there are exceptions. If you are bilingual English/Spanish and you want to take the AP Spanish exam, then you may do just fine taking the exam without taking the course. Make sure that you do your research though. Bottom line: If the course is offered, it’s best to take it 99% of the time. While some people feel this way more than others, everyone wants to learn new things at a certain rate. So, if you’re at a point in your career where you know how to do everything that’s asked of you, the chances are you’re going to start to get bored. Yes, there is a satisfaction to being really good at what you do but the chances are that unless you get challenged every now and then, your satisfaction at work will dip. If you’re not being given new challenges, and not being sent on training courses then it’s definitely time to shake things up a bit. Otherwise, you might find yourself stuck in a rut long-term. 3 â€" There’s no Opportunity for Growth Now, not everyone is looking for a career path that leads them to be CEO. Plenty of people work as a means to an end, so they can fund their hobbies for example, and look for their advancement in that. However, if you are looking for a career rather than a job, then being able to move on from where you are is important. If there aren’t openings higher up in the company, or for some reason they are not available to you then it’s time to take your skills elsewhere. 4 â€" There’s a More Direct Route Let’s say, for example, that you want to make it to project manager. If you progress through the ranks at work, this might take you 5+ years. Or you could take a year off, get a qualification and come back into the job market in your ideal role. Although taking time off to study might seem unachievable, it’s often far quicker and less disruptive of everyday life than other things such as distance learning. 5 â€" A Change is as Good as a Rest Sometimes, it’s not so much that there’s anything wrong with where you are now, but more that you just need to shake things up a bit. Change can be very good for you. It broadens your horizons, which in turn makes you more compassionate, and offers challenges that help to make you stronger. Why not see how you too could benefit from implementing it…Adapting Your CVRight now, while you are presumably still in school, you should create a ‘skeleton’ CV: write your header and your educational background, list your extracurricular activities and any awards you might have won.Don’t forget to list your interests, hobbies and any skills you might have the would be relevant in the workplace.A typical CV is two A4 pages; don’t worry if you have a lot of space leftov er after compiling the qualities you’ve amassed so far.When it comes time for you to start applying for specific jobs, adapting your CV to suit the position advertised starts with reading the advert carefully.Most adverts will list the job’s requirements and skills required to do the job well. Compare what the advert calls for against what you have to offer; are you a potential candidate?Bear in mind that you won’t meet every listed qualification, especially not this early in your working life.However, there is a good chance that you have more than a few of them and you can make them stand out by deleting your skeleton’s listed qualifications that aren’t mentioned in the advert.If it so happens that you are missing quite a few of those skills, you might list similar experiences or any transferable skills you have that would apply.And, as a way of expanding your CV while putting your best foot forward, do consider adding some of those qualities to your CV profile;  it is th e first thing a prospective employer will read.Look here to find more tips on finding your first job… It's never too early to write a cover letter... Image by Luidmila Kot from PixabayAdapting Your Cover LetterResumes and cover letters go hand-in-hand so, if you adjust one, you must adjust the other.A cover letter serves to introduce yourself; your potential employer wants a bit of elaboration of the data you’ve listed in your CV.In the first paragraph, you should list the job title you’re applying for and where you found the advert â€" an online jobs board, your university’s recruitment events or in a newspaper.Your second paragraph should get to the meat of the matter: why you are qualified for this position and how your skills relate to the job posting.Ideally, you should raise these points in bulleted statements, sort of like preparing for a phone interview:As a member of our school’s debate team, I used critical thinking skills to successfully debate a wide range of issues, from sustainable farming to immigrant rights.As I progressed through school, I made myself availab le to underclassmen throughout their first year on campus.I was team captain for our Junior football club.In spite of my academic workload, I nevertheless made ample use of hand tools and power tools during my assays into community volunteering during summer break.You might not think that your accomplishments amount to much but, as you can see, they can certainly be parlayed into relevant skills you could use on any job.The above list is a fine example if you’re applying for a job that calls for leadership skills but what if you’re applying for one that doesn’t â€" maybe a sales job?In that case, your debate team experience serves to highlight your communication skills and helping underclassmen shows what a great team player you are.
